Could someone show me what this little device looks like and how it was used?

Nobody?  It is a small leather covered key or pin that goes with the Kammerlader.  Some sort of percussion nipple protector or dry-firing device.

I would like to make one of my own but I don't know the dimensions or exactly how it is used....

Oyvind help! :-(

The "klikklær", which directly translated means "clicking leather" is a leather covered needle. To use it, cock the hammer, and insert the needle into the hole on the underside of the kammerlader.

You can see a drawing of the clicking leather in this post (from the Norwegian forum): Kammerlader accessories. I think I have a better drawing, and I can post them later if I find them.

You can see that I have inserted a provisional clicking leather on my kammerlader in this picture:

Unfortunately, as the picture is a thumbnail, it is small. This particular piece is made of a piece of wood with a nail in the end. The wood is covered with rubber tubing.

So is it a safety then? Like the leather protector in Enfield percussion and snider rifles?

You loaded the chamber, closed it, and put in the klikklaer? To fire you could take it out, put on a cap and be ready?  I'm guessing here :-|

The clicking leather had basically two functions:

  • It acted as a nipple protector when dry fireing the weapon.
  • The kammerlader does not have a half cock notch, and the clicking leather could act as a safety when the rifle was capped and loaded.

Today it is recommended that a clicking leather or similar device is used when loading. The opinions differ whether the hammer should be cocked when loading. If the hammer is cocked, it may accidentally release when you close the chamber, and this ignite a chamber that is not properly closed. On the other hand, if the hammer is uncocked it is in direct contact with the cap when you close the chamber. In theory, this can also set off the charge before the chamber is closed.

According to the contemporary military manuals, the cock should be uncocked when loading, but I don't know whether this is the safest. The soldiers of the
flintlock era was instructed to prime their muskets before loading, even though this is not considered very safe by today's standards. Back then it was more important to save time than to be safe.

However, if you use the clicking leather you should be safe.

1. Cock the hammer (you may also want to uncock the hammer so that it rests against the clicking leather).
2. Insert the clicking leather.
3. Load powder and ball.
4. Cap the nipple.
5. Close the chamber.
6. Cock the hammer
7. Remove the clicking leather.
8. Aim and shoot.

Ah, I had misunderstood how it was used.  I thought it went into the nipple channel of the chamber :-(

So it is placed across the hammer channel with the tip through the hole of the stud on the left side of the hammer spring?  If the hammer is released it hits the klikklaer since it is across the hammer channel.... I think I have seen the light.

Actually I have nearly finished making one.  I just need to reduce the rod diameter ever so slightly and finish stitching the leather and I'm done :-D

Thanks for the offer anyway!
