Jarmann - should I?

What a question to pose, I already know what you will say, but it helps my conscience :-D

Should I get a nice Carl Gustav made Jarmann rifle?  Are they good shooters (read your article Oyvind)?  Any problems with them?

As I understand it, the 10.15 x 61R cartridge for the Jarmann is rated as one of the most efficient of the old black powder cartridges and the Jarmann attained much better figures of merit at 600m than the M1867 Rolling Block, the French M1871 Gras, the British Martini-Henry, and the Mauser M1871.  This would tend to put it right up there with the best of the then contemporary military long arms until the introduction of small bore smokeless rifles such as the Lebel, Krag, and Lee.  I believe the original bullet was a flat nosed paper patched bullet.  Later loadings used a jacketed bullet which gave very good accuracy and smaller spreads with smokeless or semi smokeless powders.

They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.

Of course - go for it!

It's not the best repeater, it's not the most accurate cartridge, but it is a  piece of history worth owning.

WELL......Yes!:-D
And don't forget the pictures when you do get it.

I am indeed looking for the history, and if it shoots well, then it's a bonus :-D

Why is it not considered a good repeater?  Since it appears to work on the Kropatschek principle it should be quite slick, or are you refering to the balance problem with the tube mag? Then I agree that a Lee-Metford or Mannlicher 1886 is better in that respect.

All I need to do now is save up my pennies:knegge:

As you can see in this movie it is quite tricky to load cartridges in the magazine. The feeding of cartridges from the magazine into the action sometimes causes the action to jam. I haven't shot it enough with cartridges in the magazine to notice any balance problems. I almost exclusively use it as a single-shot rifle.

It will be interesting to compare it to the Kropatscheck which loads, feeds and ejects even empty cases flawlessly.  I usually only load 2 or 3 rounds in by repeaters so I am not bothered about the balance issue.

It pains me to see shooters using repeaters as single shots :-P I tend to get better results with them if I do short firing strings without lowering the rifle from the shoulder rather than single loading, probably more to do with consistent body posture than anything else.

Well the deed is done, a three band Carl Gustav rifle is on the way. Brass tipped clearing rod missing but it looks easy to make a new one. Will need help with dimensions.

Not yet, it is in Denmark so a bit of legal red tape needs to be sorted out before I get it since the rifle is licensed in DK.  All it takes is a nice letter from Dutch customs which I am waiting for the postman to deliver.

Patience my friends!

Just tried sending Bertram an order for some brass but my email was thrown back "address unknown".  Has it changed from bbertram@bigpond.com?

I'd suggest that you send an e-mail to The Norwegian. I know he has been in contact with Bertram regarding Jarmann brass lately.

Gaaaaaa!

The dealer reckons that the Jarmann is a nitro weapon needing a full export/import license :sur: I am trying to convince them otherwise

Well,
How is the Jarmann doing????
If you would like some brass I will trade you for some Danish Snider (carbine) brass.

Fabian23

I am getting the relevant paperwork signed by the police today and faxing it the the dealer in DK.  Once their admin is done they can ship.  I hope it gets here within two weeks.  For brass I have placed an order with "The Norwegian".  I have a few other projects on so I don't mind the wait.  Sadly the Snider brass never appeared, despite numerous assurances that they would find some they at last admitted that they could no longer find any, but will keep looking.

Finally, the papers are signed, stamped, and faxed off to DK.  Looks like I will have it in my hands this side of Christmas after all.

If anyone can give me the measurements of the cleaning rod I can attempt to reproduce it in anticipation of receiving the rifle.

Final question: Should the bolt be in the white or with a surface finish?  All the online info shows them with a shiny clean bolt.
