Factory Engraved Colt Single Action Army, with Period Holster
Lot #1075 (Sale Order 74 of 531)
Serial no. 148640, .44-40 cal., 5-1/2" barrel, blue and case hardened finish, factory checkered black hard rubber grips with embossed rampant colt logo type. Mfg'd in 1892. Revolver is engraved in the classic Helfricht style with Germanic scrolls to frame and punchdot decoration. Cylinder shows alternate scroll and sunbrust motifs to highpoints between flutes, backstrap is lightly engraved, buttstrap is engraved with the initials "B.R.N.", triggerguard shows wavy line and punchdot motifs, as does the entire length of the ejector rod. Pistol shows approx. 3/4 total coverage. Brown leather holster shows continuous wheel-applied edge border with maker's monogram stylishly applied to front of holster, and the number "44" applied to the belt loop which is double brass riveted to body. Factory letter verifies all features, including engraving, shipped to P. Bergersen, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Nov. 30, 1892, two guns in shipment.
Condition:
Very good to almost fine. Retaining approx. 70% factory blue. Case colors have thinned to approx. 20% but remain vivid in protected areas. Backstrap shows light thinning and toning, with cylinder having mostly gone a matte grayish blue. Barrel retains approx. 75% blue, with ejector rod showing finish loss at high edges. Grips show light flattening to checks but with no losses. Action is crisp, bore is excellent. A nice early Helfricht engraved Single Action in a scarce configuration with factory hard rubber grips. Holster remains in very good condition and appears original to the gun in every way, with light general scuffing and high edges losses to finish. Stitching has split from triggerguard area approx. 50% down back edge.
Estimate: $ 8000.00-12000.00 (solgt for $ 75.000,-)

This 1874 Sharps rifle is a great example of a been-there, done-that authentic western buffalo rifle. It was shipped from Sharps in 1879 with double set triggers, open sights, and a medium-weight .45 caliber barrel, but rebuilt by a Cheyenne gunsmith with a much heavier barrel in .40-100 caliber, and fitted with a Rice telescopic sight in a free-floating mount. While this was built just too late to have been used in the heyday of the slaughter of the wild buffalo, it is a fine example of the rifle configuration used by serious hunters and target shooters alike at that time.

Petter Harry Bergersen, Born in Oslo (at that time Christiania) Norway in 1852. He was educated gunsmith by trade and emigrated to America in 1876. Gun production was big at that time and Norway also tried to make guns the best they could. Several gunsmiths emigrated to America like also Iver Johnson from Nordfjord in Norway.

I read that Peter Bergersen was a very active competitive riflemen, for a time he held several national records using the Standard American Target.

Just before setting out on the 1876 campaign, 1st Sgt. John Ryan of Company M, Seventh Cavalry spent 100 dollars (around 4 months worth of pay) for a .45 caliber 15 lbs Sharps rifle with a telescopic sight.
He used it in the Valley Fight and during the defense of Reno Hill, the 2 day engagement the Seventh Cavalry fought against the Lakota and Cheyenne at Little Big Horn. Sgt. Ryan, having one of the few rifles that could deal with Indian sharpshooters out of range of the .45-55 Springfield carbines (along with his CO, Capt. Thomas French, who had a .50 caliber Springfield infantry model), drew a bead on warriors some 600 yards out and was able to stop the long range sniping.
The Indians firing from those far off positions were thought to also have Sharps buffalo rifles, given the noise they made and range at which they were firing from.

I've seen what seems hundreds of videos here.
Very seldom, as in never, have I wished I could actually acquire any of these firearms up for auction.
Until now. My mouth is watering. My toes hurt. I want that rifle sooooo badly.
If only the auction wasn't long over. If only I wasn't poor.
Like dear old dad used to tell me as a wee lad: "Wish in one hand & sh*t in the other & see what you get the most of."
Oh well.

Du betaler ikke noe mer for å få spesialsydde mål. Den kosta 91 dollar pluss frakt og moms og greier. Frakt er svindyrt. Jeg betalte 90 dollar for å få tilsendt tre støpeformer.
Og jeg skrev først feil om målene på kula. Den er .69 på nesa, ikke .685.

Last post by Torgeir - 08. September 2026 kl. 23:07:04Da har jeg bestilt tang fra Accurate molds, og jeg oppga målene til å bli en hælbasert versjon. Denne er .685 på nesa og .672 på de to båndene. Slik smetter den akkurat ned i hylsa. Med 50 grains zloty stok gikk tre skudd svært tett på 50 meter (se bilde), mens det fjerde ble en lav slenger. Håper dette skyldtes dårlig støp. (Må ha ny blygryte). Den andre og litt jevnere gruppa er med 50 grs sveitser 4.

I like your plan. There should be plenty of the information you seek on this page, but language of course is a barrier.
There's plenty of guys on this forum with extensive experience shooting these rifles, and they can be surprisingly accurate.
Bullet molds are somewhat hard to come by. Accurate molds have several suitable designs listed as "kammerlader". Myself, I am using this design successfully in black powder competitions here. https://accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=70-675K
The load is 85 grains of 2F, with the bullet stuffed on top of it seated in a carton wad formed like a cupcake-form. Some rifles need a wad like this to shoot really well, others just need a disc of carton or semolina or whatever you prefer between powder and lead. Make sure to stuff plenty of lard on top of the bullet once chambered. You mention hollow base. As far as I know, these rifles did not use hollow base bullets.

I recently bought a Belgian/Francotte M/1849/55 Kammerlader, serial number 1156, in 18 lødig. It appears to be matching-numbered and is marked Fr.M.C-D83.
I'm trying to learn as much as I can about it and put together a proper collector's dossier. I'm especially interested in the original M/1855 pointed bullet and paper cartridge.
I would eventually like to shoot the rifle with black powder, assuming it is first checked and found safe to fire, so I'd like to get the historical ammunition details as accurate as possible.
Does anyone have original measurements, drawings, photos, or other information on the M/1855 bullet — especially diameter, length, weight, grooves, hollow base and paper cartridge construction?
I'd also be very interested to hear from anyone who has experience shooting an original 18-lødig M/1849/55.
And if anyone here knows of a suitable bullet mould, makes them, or knows someone who does, I'd be grateful for any leads.
